Diesel Fuel Filtration – The Importance of Clean Fuel

Unlike gasoline engines, diesel power plants are specifically designed to run on less refined fuel, which contains more contaminants. However, this dirtier diesel fuel can still wreak havoc if too many contaminants enter the system.

Solid particles such as dirt, rust or deposits can quickly wear out fuel pumps and injectors. Water in the fuel can cause rust corrosion and even lead to water hammer in the engine. And sometimes bacterial microbes get into the tanks and release muddy by-products.

This is where diesel fuel filters come in: they provide a robust barrier against all potential contaminants before they reach the sensitive engine components.

Primary and secondary filtration

Most diesel fuel systems use a two-stage filtration process with primary and secondary filter units. The primary filter removes the majority of contaminants from the fuel coming directly from the tank.

In this first stage, densely packed filter media is used to capture particles as small as about 10 microns or less. Many filters also have water separator membranes, which ensure that moisture contaminants clump together to form large droplets, which are then discharged.

Secondary level

From there, the partially filtered fuel enters the secondary stage. The secondary filter media has even finer porosities in the range of 2-5 microns. This finer filter provides the final polish before the diesel reaches the injection system.

Filter media and maintenance

While simple filter designs are based on cellulose-based paper media, synthetic microfiber materials are often used in premium devices. This allows for a higher dirt holding capacity and traps smaller contaminants.

At some point, however, every filter becomes clogged and has to be replaced. That's why it's so important to follow the recommended maintenance intervals for both primary and secondary units. Using high-quality OEM filters is also critical, as low-quality aftermarket filters may not meet the same stringent standards.

For extreme operating conditions such as in mines or quarries, even more filters are used in modern systems. Final filter units directly in front of the injectors also catch the last microscopic residues. These require less frequent maintenance, but are still indispensable.
